"Where the eyes or body of any person may be exposed to injurious corrosive materials, suitable facilities for quick drenching or flushing of the eyes and body shall be provided within the work area for immediate emergency use."

The 10-second rule originates from the consensus standard ANSI Z358.1, reffered to by OSHA as a recognized source of guidance, for where an eyewash station must be located. According to ANSI Standard Z358.1, eyewashes and emergency shower equipment must be accessible to the employee within 55 feet (approximately 10 seconds) of places where accidental exposure may be expected. 5. Rotate the eyes to ensure that all areas are thoroughly flushed.
